IRL OpSec — Real-World Security
Last updated: May 2026
Your digital security is only as strong as your physical security. This section covers real‑world operational security for darknet users.
Golden Rules of IRL OpSec
- Never talk about your activities with anyone, even trusted friends.
- Use a secure location for your darknet activities — not your primary residence if possible.
- Dispose of evidence securely: shred documents, wipe drives, use encrypted USB sticks.
- Be aware of your surroundings – physical surveillance is real.
- Maintain a normal routine — don't act suspiciously or change your habits abruptly.
Counter‑Surveillance
- Vary your travel routes and times when going to your secure location.
- Check for surveillance before entering sensitive locations — look for parked cars, people watching, etc.
- Use burners for communications, and replace them regularly.
- Never carry evidence on you unless necessary.
Physical Security
- Lock your devices and use strong passwords.
- Encrypt your drives with LUKS or VeraCrypt.
- Keep USB sticks with sensitive data in a secure location.
- Know your emergency exit and have a plan.
Remember: Your digital security is only as strong as your physical security. Protect both.
