Operating Systems for Maximum Anonymity

Your operating system is the foundation of your security. Using Windows or macOS for sensitive activities is dangerous — they leak identifying information and are full of telemetry. This guide covers two secure operating systems: Tails and Whonix.

Tails vs Whonix

Tails (The Amnesiac Incognito Live System): A live USB system that leaves no traces on the computer. It forces all traffic through Tor and includes built-in tools like PGP and KeePassXC. Best for beginners.
Whonix: A virtual machine-based system that routes all traffic through Tor by default. It separates the workstation from the gateway, making it harder to leak IP addresses. More advanced.

Both are excellent choices. If you are new, start with Tails. If you need a persistent, customizable environment, use Whonix.

System Requirements

Tails: A USB flash drive (8 GB minimum), 64-bit x86 processor, 2 GB RAM.
Whonix: VirtualBox or KVM, 4 GB RAM, 20 GB disk space.

Tip: Use hardware that you own and that has not been tampered with. Avoid using work or shared computers.
